Day 7, 8 and 9 #100daysofPhD Total fail - day job took over, but hey ho. No biggy. Will read a paper this aft 👍🏻

Starting watching Mr Men with the kids yesterday and this morning my daughter said ‘Mr? Where are all the Mrs?’ That’s my girl. #raisingfeministkids

Day 6 #100daysofPhD setting myself small reading goals per day may actually be for the win. My day - school drop off - cats to the vet - post office - full days work - lesson planning, responding to emails, planning ahead etc AND read a paper, made notes & now I’m thinking about it. Winner.

Day 4 and 5 #100daysPhD With kids still at home on holiday it’s just been some reading over the last few days. Plans to make an inspiration board at the weekend (with the kids) and using my new highlighters in the books I shouldn’t be reading. As of tomorrow, I’m reading one paper a day for 6 days.

Day 2 & 3 #100daysofPhD Reading about patriarchal norms, ordered new highlighter pens, a notebook and some of these bad boys.

Day 1 #100daysPhD Planned my intended achievements by 10/04/25 (in 100 days). - Complete annotated bibliography on new topic - draft research questions - identify methodology and theoretical framework for research. Might buy some new pens. Now reading 👇

Day 21 #ResearchAdvent still working on the theoretical framework. I’m reading feminist research & methodologies at the moment - have considered thinking about powerful knowledge. So, Bernstein mixed with the feminist research I find that feels like it fits? Hope I’m clearer on it this time next yr

Day 20 #ResearchAdvent I’d like to meet other people doing PhDs/EdDs, supervisors and researchers…just to talk about research in an informal way as I find that really helps to make sense of it all. Enjoying the DoCos organised by @jkschmees.bsky.social at @derbyuni.bsky.social for that very reason!

Day 19 #ResearchAdvent Having finally agreed on a new focus for my research with supervisors this week, I’ve gone back to looking at narrative analysis over thematic analysis. I’ll be collecting lived experiences and actions of participants so thinking this might be the one. 🤷‍♀️

Me and @pauljglossop.bsky.social were actually twins today, and boy did we enjoy the festive feels those matching @derbyuni.bsky.social Christmas jumpers brought to the office.🎄🙌

Day 18 #ResearchAdvent I am utterly inspired by my FE & HE colleagues. Through my various roles I get to meet so many amazing practitioners, researchers & trainees. Their everyday practice blows my mind and motivates me to find out more, to learn more, so I can make a positive difference. 💜📚

Day 17 #ResearchAdvent Nourishment, rest and health - I get all of this from chilling with my family. Having a slow day at the weekends, cuddles, movies, snacks, going for a walk that ends in an ice cream & a Prosecco on the waterside at the Marina. Simple things. Bliss. 🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 And reading, obv. 💜📚

Day 15 #ResearchAdvent My favourite place to research or study is, and always will be, my bed. 🛏️📚 I want it to be more glamorous, but it is what it is. We are lucky enough to have a Doctoral College at uni though & I love reading on the orange sofa there. Without shoes on. 🛋️

Day 14 #ResearchAdvent In 3 yrs I’ll look back & think…honestly no idea. Depends how well it’s going, I guess! I have a secret dream to be an expert in a topic (a secret topic atm) so perhaps I’ll think…PAH, what a silly secret dream that was or WOW, I’m on my way to achieving that dream. Cool.

Day 13 #ResearchAdvent The thing I ❤️ most about doing a PhD is when someone says a sentence I wouldn’t have understood 6 months before and I feel like an actual research rockstar for understanding. Screaming crowd inside my brain as I crowd surf across my own mind. 🤣🤘🎸😎

Day 12 #ResearchAdvent I appreciate all the mums (parents) who are studying while raising tiny humans. The struggle is real. 😂

Day 11 #ResearchAdvent I’m excited about next week because I’ve allocated loads of time to PhD and I have lined up lots of reading and plans for writing. Hoping I make some progress in thinking about my new topic for thesis. Have been thinking about changing since summer and it’s finally happened!

Day 10 #ResearchAdvent - still grappling with methodology. I’ve been all over with this one. Currently reading about grounded theory, but I’ve been through thematic analysis, hermeneutic phenomenology, policy enactment and narrative. So. Yeh. Dunno. 🤷‍♀️

Day 9 #ResearchAdvent Publication…I’ve written for BERA blogs, I co-edit The Use of English @English Association journal & the @LSRN publication BUT forever dream is a book and/or book chapters. Working on it. Here’s my collection of publications since around 2021.& edukayte.wordpress.com

Day 8 #ResearchAdvent The biggest challenge for me is finding a focus & sticking to it! I know what I want to learn about, but what do I want to found out? Who knows. Hoping someone will just tell me what to do but that’s not how this works, apparently. 🤣 My eternal biggest challenge - focus.

Day 7 #ResearchAdvent I think everyone should read…more books. I love reading, I love closing a book I’ve just finished and finding the next one to hook me in. I’m currently reading ‘Feminine Mystique’. Before that I read ‘The Housemaid’. Books are the best. (Reading on a screen is the worst).

Day 6 #ResearchAdvent I laughed when I hung out with my fellow researcher friends, who are all awesome people. All Of Them. I realised on my hen do I choose friends who make me laugh & who I can trust with my thoughts & vulnerabilities. Many of my research pals fill those two criteria. 💜📚

Day 5 #ResearchAdvent I want other people to know … that being a feminist is meaningful. I say this because I still feel judged when I say that I am one. I am grateful for my fellow feminists (of all genders, races, abilities & classes) and for my husband, who shares my frustrations and beliefs.

How has this day already arrived? Last day in University of Derby before PGCE FES trainees break for Christmas! What an amazing bunch of people. Absolutely delighted to be one of their tutors alongside Dr Dan Williams. All ready for their break but loved this term together! 🎄

Day 4 #ResearchAdvent My favourite conference this year has to be the @felitmov.bsky.social conference, ‘Literacy and the Subject Specialist teacher.’ Came away from that absolutely buzzing! But, I’m biased. So, not sure that counts. 🤔 Went to some fab DerbyUni research cluster events, also. 🙌

Day 3 #ResearchAdvent Thinking about my belief systems & how my experiences have shaped those, in a way I have never done before. A challenging period of the PhD that I wasn’t expecting but I have really gained from. I value those who listen(ed) to me while I work this out. 💜 I’m not finished yet.

Finished a busy day of observing by presenting my PhD pilot project to fellow students at the first ‘Doctoral Colloquiulm, hosted by @jkschmees.bsky.social! Very much looking forward to being a part of this ‘safe space’ for UoD doctoral students - came away with so much from our first meeting. 🙏

Day 2 #ResearchAdvent Why the PhD? Life long dream. Why the topic? I believe that to be the best teacher you can be: 1) you need to know the best ways to teach your subject & 2) you need to have inclusion at the heart of your teaching & I think this links to retention of teachers in FE.🤔
