A FOIPOP request that I contested about the Nova Scotia Department of Education’s refusal to provide specific summary data about school violence back in 2022 was finally addressed by the Office of the Information Privacy Commissioner today. I closed it immediately. 🧵 1/?

I swore I wouldn’t use BlueSky to talk about work stuff, but this is dead accurate. Security does NOT mean privacy and vice versa. A high chain link fence may be secure to some degree, but it’s not private.

I may have been partially wrong about Becky Druhan. 4 years ago, her Department of Education did very little on the school violence front. I’m starting to think that the secrecy and evasiveness from the department was theirs alone, and MLA Druhan was likely largely in the dark.

The Nova Scotia government streamlined itself down to its most efficiently dangerous form: full blown autocracy.

Everything about this is outrageous. The NS Minister of Ed refuses to properly fund public schools. This isn't just about HRM. Apparently the protests are really getting to the provincial government. They’re pushing budget talks til 10pm tonight and blaming it on today’s protest. In other words, it’s working Nova Scotia. Keep going!

No code of conduct alteration will fix the fact that schools are not staffed appropriately, and regional centres for education need to be held to account for repeatedly failing to prevent violence against staff and students.

The NDP aren't going to magically break through outside of HRM just because it would be nice. Or because at this moment many of your friends & like-minded folks are pissed off with Houston. A whole lot of other people still think he's doing all the right things. THOSE are the ones you have to reach
