I think Eijun starts as any other shonen MC but in a certain moment you see the real deal happening and how he really is. For me, as they quoted here, maybe it's after he knows the truth about Chris and how he acts and changes in order to help him.

Eijun is the quintessential underdog--and even when he reaches his goal, he is always hardest on himself. I've always loved his character, but maybe even more so during the YIPS arc. #eijunprotectionsquad

I don’t really remember the exact moment but at some point I couldn’t stop rooting for Eijun as he grew and fumbled and kept trying again anyway. when Eijun went back up to the bullpen to grab the Koshien dirt, I couldn’t help tearing up

he gave me a bad case of second-hand embarrassment basically the whole time, which I'm weak to and that's usually a turn off, however he made me want to root for him. His steps are many, his triumphs small (until they aren't), but each and and every one is so, so satisfying.

I think the first moment I had my 'this is /my/ Ace' was seeing his capacity to admit he was completely and utterly wrong about something (Chris in this case) and actually try to make amends. I find it a rare trait in a shonen protag, especially a young genki one like Eijun. He's the real deal.
