The War Between the Land and the Sea Broadcast Update The new spin-off featuring UNIT and the Sea Devils will air later in 2025 The most recent season of Doctor Who may have ended, and we may still be awaiting news on when the show will be back. But the BBC have given a new idea of when exactly we can expect to return to the Whoniverse. The official description of spin-off The War Between the Land and the Sea now lists it as coming “later this year” to BBC One, iPlayer, and Disney+. The six part drama features the return of old enemies the Sea Devils, who previously appeared in The Sea Devils (1972), Warriors from the Deep (1984), and Legend of the Sea Devils (2022). Cousins to the Silurians, they ruled the Earth millions of years ago. However they fled into hibernation due to a global catastrophe. Now they’ve awoken and are less than pleased by the state of the world’s oceans under humanity’s care. Led by Salt (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) the set out to re-take the planet they see as their own. Defending the human race are the familiar faces at UNIT. Jemma Redgrave returns as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, who’s been appearing regularly in Doctor Who since 2011. Also transferring from the parent show are UNIT’s Colonel Cristofer Ibrahim (Alexander Devriant), and scientific advisor Shirley Bingham (Ruth Madeley). Caught between the two sides is Russell Tovey’s Barclay, who becomes a not entirely willing go-between. The Doctor themselves has tried repeatedly to broker peace between Sea Devils and humans. Can Barclay succeed where the Time Lord failed? The “later this year” wording probably means The War Between the Land and the Sea will be part of the BBC’s Autumn schedule. Traditionally, that runs from late September to early December. As an expensive, glossy, drama the Whoniverse show may well help launch the schedule, suggesting a run from late September to the end of October. Details of the time slot typically won’t be announced until a couple of weeks beforehand. However, this type of drama is often found in the 9pm Sundays slot.
