01 May 1781. After his loss at Hobkirk’s Hill, from his camp at Rugeley’s Mill, South Carolina, General Nathanael Greene wrote his most famous words to the Marquis de Lafayette in Virginia and George Washington in New York—“We fight, get beat, rise and fight again.”

General Francis Marion died on February 27, 1795 aged 63 at his home at Pond Bluff in South Carolina which is ironically now under Lake Marion. We visited his grave at Belle Isle Plantation Cemetery in December 2021. Here's some of our photos.

Aside from John Trumbull's paintings in the rotunda of the U.S. Capital depicting the American Revolution, there are statues throughout the U.S. Capital. They have witnessed many presidential inaugurations. One of them is General Nathanael Greene sculpted by Henry Kirk Brown in 1870.

The two fell in love but Catharine rejected his attempts at intimacy. Years later Catharine raised a niece, Caty Littlefield who would go on to marry Nathanael Greene

I'm excited to announce that I will be at Ninety-Six National Historic Site in Ninety Six, South Carolina on April 5, doing a presentation about Nathanael Greene & a book signing for "The Line of Splendor" as part of their 96 Crossroads event! Greene laid siege to Ninety-Six May 22 - June 18, 1781.

The joys of reading 1767 articles in the Boston Gazette with "s" that looks like "f." This is from an article that Dr. Joseph Warren wrote condemning bloodletting by another doctor who he believed caused the death of a young patient by doing so when it wasn't warranted.

We watched the 1957 movie "Johnny Tremain" on Christmas night for the first time. I have yet to read the book by Esther Forbes. I was so pleased that Dr. Joseph Warren was portrayed as the revolutionary leader that he really was. The whole movie was excellent. Huzzah!

Happy Thanksgiving! Today is also our 26th wedding anniversary. My wonderful husband has been a patient man putting up with my love for General Nathanael Greene and Dr. Joseph Warren and for cheerfully traveling everywhere so I can speak about General Greene. I love you lots, John! ❤️

Battle Ground Eutaw Springs fought on September 8, 1781. Nathanael Greene vs Alexander Stewart. We visit the battlefield when we're in South Carolina. It's quiet and leaves you with time to reflect on this important battle that both sides claimed as a victory.

On November 25, 1783 George Washington rode into New York City with nearly 800 American soldiers as the British forces evacuated. He & his troops were greeted as conquering heroes. Although the American victory at Yorktown occurred in October 1781 it took nearly 2 years to negotiate the peace treaty

I just ordered "Minds and Hearts: The Story of James Otis Jr. and Mercy Otis Warren" as a reference for my novel in progress about Dr. Joseph Warren along with the primary resources on his case against the Writs of Assistance and his "The Rights of British Colonies" against the 1764 Sugar Act.

23 November 1776. After the Continental Army began its retreat through New Jersey, Washington sent a request to General Charles Lee to move his army at North Castle Heights, NY across the Hudson. Instead, Lee wrote to General William Heath at Peekskill telling him to send 2000 troops. Heath refused.

We're home from my 2 week speaking tour in South Carolina about Nathanael Greene. We met so many great people who love & respect him as much as we do. After my talk about General Nathanael Greene at Camden Revolutionary War Visitor Center today, we went to the Camden Battlefield for the 2nd time. Afterward, we went to Quaker Hill to pay our respects to the 12 soldiers buried there whose remains were discovered on the battlefield in 2022.

The 4th and final stop on my speaking tour in South Carolina about General Nathanael Greene is at Camden Revolutionary War Visitor Center. We were in Camden 3 years ago and visited Hobkirk Hill and Camden Battlefield. This time some of my family is going to attend!

The third stop on my speaking tour in South Carolina about General Nathanael Greene is a dinner/lecture tonight at the private Piedmont Club in Spartanburg. Men's dinner jackets are required, so perhaps General Greene should wear the uniform he wore on formal occasions for the Continental Army. 😉
