Sex scenes are SCENES, with all of the burdens a scene carries: advancing plot, revealing character, complicating relationships, etc. A sex scene must do at least some of those things or it fails as a scene. Excellent romance writers know this, and Grant is one of the best. Love this analysis :).

As I see it, your setting is a character in your story. Perhaps the main character, or a main character, or a secondary one - all can exist. And like all characters, built not of atoms and veins and muscles, or of sewers and taxes, but of the stories, both told and untold, that show us who they are.

I also think that the details people tut-tut about being super essential (bUt hoW doES TaX wORk?) only require explication insofar as they enhance the action. Unless we’re going to be crawling through sewage tunnels, I don’t support dwelling on the setting’s unremarkable waste management system.

not only do they overrate worldbuilding, they're mistaken about the signs of good worldbuilding. you don't need to know the answer to every question about the world. when you encounter something you don't understand, you need to feel that there is an answer rather than know what it is.
