Great outcomes for NH schools despite having the lowest state funding in the nation: costs paid by local property taxpayers. And now, with the Governor signing HB 1300 to put local school tax caps on the ballot, state leadership is making it even harder for communities to bridge the gap.

This is not true. NH voters can vote without an ID on their person — submit an affidavit — because their identity can be lost, stolen, burned in a house fire, etc. Identity verification always, or an automatic investigation is initiated.

The NH House may try to police bathrooms again, but the Governor will veto it again, and there will never be an overriding majority. What’s the plan? Make accusations, ID people at the door; then get sued? I believe people should have the freedom to be themselves.

New data centers use closed-loop cooling (recirculate). They don’t have this problem, but power generation uses lots of water. Add to that, people are paying more for energy and consumer tech in exchange for AI that may replace them in the workforce. 1/2

Small business owners also pay property taxes, so moving taxes from BET to their — and everyone else’s — property tax bill isn’t exactly a gift. About 5% of businesses operating in NH pay about 80% of BET. Those aren’t “small businesses. 1/2

HB2026 included major transportation and infrastructure projects. It had bipartisan support. It was vetoed because it would raise toll prices for drivers from out-of-state. Neighboring states have long done the same to NH drivers who pay higher ME and MA tolls. I don’t get the veto.

I don’t understand this veto. The state needs tolls revenue to fund our roads. Raising fees for out-of-state drivers would be harmless to New Hampshire residents and reciprocal with neighboring Mass and Maine, which already charge a premium to NH drivers.

✋ Energy utilities operate in regional monopolies with captive demand. Absent consumer advocacy, utilities could build infrastructure at will and pass the costs, plus profit margins, along to consumers. That increases consumer costs, so it’s important to make sure builds are necessary.

There’s been no report of any injury resulting from the unfair advantage of a transgender student athlete playing a sport in New Hampshire, nor has any competition been decided. The legislature is targeting trans people — including children — because it wants to target trans people.

I believe that all children should be able to play sports. Trans kids are 3 to 4 times more likely to commit suicide than their peers — a legacy that the “pro-life” SCOTUS will own.

If New Hampshire legislature’s tax policies are indeed favorable for residents, why can’t young people afford to live here? Why are they moving away? Will more of the same policies that eliminate state revenue sources to reduce education funding and increase property taxes/rents fix it?

I try to stick values over partisanship, but there’s an obvious counterpoint here. Republicans only cut Business Enterprise and Interest and Dividends taxes, which you probably don’t pay. They also cut municipal funding, which you definitely do pay as higher property taxes and rent.

I’m speculating, but my gut says that this is due to a combination of factors: high cost of housing, expensive healthcare, eroding social safety nets, and the lack of financial capacity to save for retirement. Starting a family is too expensive.

Don’t worry about your high property tax bill. The Statehouse will get the Business Enterprise Tax back to 1993 levels. Gifting more money to enterprises, sending that money out of state, and pushing costs to your property tax bill will fix it. Down is up.

Manchester Rep. Drew and other reps. don’t like wealth taxes. Property taxes are a wealth tax. A person’s wealth is tied up in their property, which is taxed. Access that wealth for another purpose; lose housing. Yet, the Statehouse regularly downshifts costs to property taxpayers. 1/2

When the state cuts funding to municipalities, that’s outside of local control. The state only allows municipalities to raise money through property taxes. That is outside of local control. Property taxpayers have to pay for the funding gap. That’s outside of local control.

They lowered the Business Enterprise Tax. Under 20% of businesses pay it: enterprises. The school voucher program increased property taxes by stripping municipalities of revenue and leaving property owners to cover the loss.

Cutting your taxes means funding public education. It’s election season. If you’re struggling with high property taxes and rent — property taxes are loaded in rent — this is evergreen. Cutting Business Enterprise Taxes again won’t help you at all.

Cut aid to municipalities. ➡️ Municipalities pay more. ➡️ Cut municipalities’ ability to fund public education. ➡️ Public education quality declines. ➡️ Blame public schools for decline in quality. ➡️ Privatize education. ➡️ No money; no good school for your kids.

This’ll be the most common take on why proof-of-citizenship was common sense legislation and its rejection must mean the judge wants “illegals” to vote. It ignores that that votes-by-affidavit are verified within 7 days. The problem the legislation solves doesn’t exist.

Between 1998 and 2024, there have been 47 instances of fraud among 8.3 million votes. That’s the math. The state has a process to verify affidavits. Voters don’t trust the system because their politicians have sown distrust, so they can make it harder to vote.

Good news. Proof-of-citizenship voting is a solution in search of a problem. Unlawful people aren’t voting. Existing controls do the job. Adding new burdens for valid voters will only prevent legal votes from being counted. That’s unacceptable.
