Srefidensi Dey! Suriname 50 jaar onafhankelijk! 🇸🇷 In de jaren voor 1975 gingen er in zowel Suriname als Nederland steeds meer stemmen op voor de onafhankelijkheid van Suriname. Zo ook bij LOSON, een belangenbehartigingsorganisatie voor Surinamers in Nederland, van wie het IISG het archief beheert.

Vandaag, op 24 november, is het (Un)Equal Pay Day. Vanaf nu werken vrouwen in Nederland de rest van het jaar symbolisch voor niets, aangezien ze gemiddeld 10,5% minder per uur dan mannen verdienen.

Op 28 november organiseren NEHA, Stichting Bedrijfsgeschiedenis en het IISG een symposium waarbij zowel het perspectief vanuit onderzoek als collectievorming aan bod komt.

Great news! Our colleague Touraj Atabaki won a prestigious prize for his latest book Toiling for Oil: A Social History of Petroleum in Iran. He was awarded the annual prize to the best scholarly work in Middle Eastern Studies by the British-Kuwait Friendship Society Book Prize.

Het vegetarisme een modern verschijnsel? 🥑 Helemaal niet! In 1894 wordt in navolging van bonden in Duitsland en Engeland de Nederlandse Vegetariërsbond (NVB) opgericht. De leden hangen een levensstijl aan waarbij er geen dieren worden gegeten en er veel aandacht is voor natuur en gezondheid.

Almudena Rubio, researcher at the IISH, identified Francisca Fernández Quesada as the woman breastfeeding a baby in one of the most iconic photographs of the Spanish Civil War, taken by Kati Horna in 1937. Almudena published an article about this discovery in the Spanish newspaper El País.
