Germany is working to restore peatlands that were once drained for agriculture—a practice that released vast quantities of carbon dioxide and harmed the rich plant and animal life in marshes and bogs.

“Whether in Europe, North America, Brazil, the Congo Basin, or Indonesia, preventing peat degradation is essential for humanity if we are serious about achieving carbon neutrality by mid-century,” said Franziska Tanneberger, a peatland scientist and director of the Greifswald Mire Centre.

This week the @PeatMothership second year-end meeting happened at the @NatureScot @PeatlandACTION headquarters at Battleby

The #PeatMothership crew also visited a local farming business to find out more about managing peat soils under agricultural use, including cattle breed selection, choices about water management, and the ongoing greenhouse gas flux monitoring at this site by @JamesHuttonInst
