The only benefit to scores is avgs, and those are just as bad An average of 3 means something incredibly different if it's every reviewer scored it near 3 vs they all went either 1 or 5 And then, until reading individual reviews, who's taste aligns enough with yours that the avg is worth anything?

Adding to the hating on review scores, agreed on these points, but also, they're useless You give a game a 4, what does that mean? Does every 4 look the same to you? The answer is bound to be, no. The score needs to be contextualized. It's meaningless without the explanation, so, what's the point?

100% agree with Jordan here. One thing I’ll add is that review scores contribute to these kinds of lazy, reductionist conversations about art, which is why I loathe them.

Review scores, frame rate, sales, player counts, price, etc. It all just feels like this nerd impulse to use Objective Math to avoid the uncomfortable realities of discussing subjective art. Annoyingly stockholder brained, too

Had a moment listening to music with my daughter last night where I realized music singles don’t exist anymore. She had no concept of the idea. (I know they technically still exist, but not in the way I traditionally think of them as “the songs on the radio and with music videos.”

I think the biggest damage to the art community was the obsolescence of gallery sites (y!, deviantart, etc) and the rise of scroll-by social media, like twitter and even tumblr. Art is not ''content'', you shouldnt need to post art every day (or every month!) to be relevant. This mindset sucks.

Is there a way to avoid retreading the “video games as art” discourse while acknowledging how uniquely internet-brained we are when critiquing them? So much of how we talk about games are in reaction to gaming culture—reactions that would sound ridiculous applied to, say, a painting, book, or movie

I have a defining childhood memory of my dad plunging the drain off a flooded basement, and when I asked him why he doesn’t stop he just said, “perseverance.” I still remember the moment the drain cleared May my daughter remember the Ghost of Yotei boss fight she watched me play until midnight

Related note... constant layoffs lead to awful employees. Everyone knows someone (or *is* someone) whose productivity was decimated for weeks, months, or longer after surviving layoffs. Hard to emotionally recover from it

It has been over a year since I was laid off and I have given career doomsday prep advice by request to at least a dozen still employed people.

I would love HR or payroll or tech support that wasn't me 🥺 Talking to some friends who have never been self-employed sometimes frustrates me because they seem to think that anyone who's not a "worker" is some fat cat CEO "capitalist." It's like: my dude, I would just like paid sick leave.
