Has anyone heard from the AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges) on biomedical research funding? They represent 176 medical schools in the US and Canada, >490 academic health systems and teaching hospitals, and 70+ academic societies. Despite strength in numbers, they too remain petrified.

Given recent events at the ADA meeting, Kamran Abbasi, editor-in-chief of The British Medical Journal, speaks out on freedom of the press, politics, and science. Why do US editors not do likewise? Where are the medical associations? Muzzled? Do you want to be counted amongst those who stayed silent?

Yesterday, I met Jay Bhattacharya briefly for the first time. I don’t think he’s a fan. 😬🤷‍♀️😇 He spoke yesterday at an NIH workshop on Health Disparities. I want to reflect on his talk, as well as the brief interaction that followed. Here goes… 🧵1/???

Kudos to this Seattle teacher taking the vital message of the need for research funding to her high school students and colleagues. Simply appalling that mere mention of DEI should mean cancellation of funds to educate our youth. Let’s hope more of our great educators can carry her message forward.

These two former chairs of the Board of Directors of the American Diabetes Association encapsulate well the response of many to the "apology" from the ADA. Who is advising them? They cannot seem to get out of their own way.

The ADA apologizes and says it is committed to biomedical research. I expect them and other non-profits to no longer hide behind 501(c)(3) status and to speak out vociferously in public about the destruction being wreaked upon US research, not just NIH. www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7K2...

Thanks for the principled stand by past Principal Officers of the American Diabetes Association. Hopefully, this letter will get the current leadership to reach out in an appropriate manner and set the record straight. They owe it to everyone, and particularly to people with diabetes.
