Let’s call this what it is: a dangerous abuse of power. The President is threatening to jail Illinois leaders while sending another state’s National Guard into our streets against our own will.

We applaud Governor Pritzker, AG Raoul, and Mayor Johnson for taking legal action to block what they’ve called an “illegal, dangerous, and unconstitutional federalization” of the Illinois National Guard. Their leadership shows what public safety really looks like: prevention, not force.

The President is federalizing the IL National Guard against the will of our own governor. This is federal overreach at its most dangerous: undermining trust, destabilizing communities, and threatening the progress we've made. Real safety is built from the ground up — by communities, not commands.

We have achieved historic reductions in violence through prevention, investment, and strong gun laws. That real progress is now endangered—not by crime itself, but by a political strategy that substitutes fear and force for proven solutions. We reject it in the strongest terms.

The President went further, describing an “invasion from within … no different than a foreign enemy.” That is language of war, aimed at Americans. It signals an approach that risks turning federal power against the very people it should protect.

While ICE pulls people off the street in downtown Chicago, Trump told Pentagon leaders that Democrat-run cities should serve as “training grounds for our military” and that “we’re going into Chicago very soon.” This grave escalation likens our neighborhoods to battlefields.

While the circus around a potential federal deployment dominates headlines, too often the people most impacted—victims and families—are forgotten. Gun violence is not a political show. It’s about lives cut short, loved ones grieving, and communities carrying the weight every day.

“The National Guard and police show up after a shooting has occurred. They don’t show up before. That’s not stopping or saving anyone.” — Trevon Bosley Chicago doesn’t need reactive shows of force. We need prevention: stronger national gun laws and real community investment.

An 8-year-old girl should never have to suffer like this. Our hearts are with her and her family as they face something no child—or parent—should endure. This is why we fought for Safe at Home. Once rolled out, it will help prevent tragedies like this from happening again.

Spot on, Mayor Johnson. We know President Trump isn’t serious about reducing violence. He’s actively cutting the very programs that work. The talk is cheap, and the actions are deadly. “Just do your job and end the trafficking of guns into our city.”
