Focusing on one cat’s adventures with wonderfully playful illustrations ‘Where Have You Been, Little Cat?’ is a sweet and gentle exploration of senses, emotions, and connection between a cat and its human. Written and illustrated by the brilliant Richard Jones.

I have a soft spot for picture books that tackle difficult historical subjects, going against genre and format standards, blurring the intended age expectations. ‘Love in the Library’ by Maggie Tokuda-Hall, illustrated by Yasmin Imamura, is one such picture book.

The newly minted laureate of the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award Jon Klassen is well known and celebrated for his picture book writing and illustration. But I thought I’d highlight his beautiful work illustrating book covers for middle grade novels as they deserve their own praise.

Beautiful use of lasercut illustrations in this story about children coming together to revive a forgotten glasshouse in the middle of their city. The Glasshouse by Hélène Druvert (Thames & Hudson, 2025)

Completely in love with this scrumptious and witty homage to Maurice Sendak’s In the Night Kitchen. Stunningly illustrated and full of unique charm. X.Fang is quickly becoming one of my favourite picture book makers working today. Dim Sum Palace by X.Fang (Pushkin Press, 2024)

A wonderful little story that encourages us to be ourselves, but also to uplift others. The book was originally published in 1962, and was lovingly reprinted in 2021 by Happy Books Press, giving Helen Borten’s voice and her beautifully expressive monotype illustrations the love they deserve.
