everybody is giving tips now and i'm just now realizing this post is not phrased like a tip at all because i had too many things i loved about how aki irie does itty bitty drawings running through my head

This is one of my most popular comic-making tips on twt, so I'll bring it to bsky! ⭐ When drawing comics, only 1-2 panels on a page need to be VERY GOOD. ⭐ The other panels are just there to lead the readers to each VERY GOOD panel and then to the page turn.

good tips! being able to draw simplified doodles of your characters is probably one of the most important skills in comicking you can develop! readers are going to glance over the average panel whether you spend ten minutes drawing it or two hours!

tips! paneling is such a huge topic i'll paralyze myself so i'll just say i really like to look out for how an artist handles itty bitty version of their characters because it shows their affinity and energy for their drawing tools. kind of paneling lol? (examples r all aki irie i loveee her stuff)

usually i see like 20 deer on my neighborhood walk but today i kid u not i saw 0 deer and like 35+ vultures was kind of crazy

haha i've been thinking about this a lot lately - my approach comes from being just one person but wanting to convey more story efficiently, plus an illustrator's love for meta-frame and ornament. ikuhara is big influence of mine, tho that's more on a theory level than literal since he directs anime

omg new haruko ichikawa artbook apparently 🥺🥺🥺 ahhh the end of houseki had a different feeling in line and markmaking than the beginning and that's partially due to setting & theme but also i feel like that's where ichikawa's interests were taking her. curious if the artbook will reflect that

start working in reality there’ll be a bunch of things I “saw” working in my minds eye but don’t actually. Which is fine, that’s just the process and friction of making art, + my lack of experience. I just hold onto the energy/narrative I consider the core of the piece and make choices that way
