âThe more chaotic our times, the deeper is our need to slow down and read fiction. In an age of anger and anxiety, clashing certainties, rising jingoism and populism, the division between âusâ and âthemâ also deepens. The novel, however, dismantles dualitiesâ â€ïž

FOCUS: âMistake after mistake after mistakeâ
What happens when someone calls the police with a rape allegation, but they are met with a series of mistakes from the moment officers arrive until the trial? A Guernseywoman went viral on TikTok last year speaking about her experiences. Daisy Chapple's story shows what can go wrong when someone makes a report of rape to the police. "I knew that I would be making a complaint when all of this was done, regardless of the verdict," she said.

âLandmarkâ domestic abuse ruling is âkeyâ for public confidence
The overturning of a domestic abuse sentencing yesterday has been welcomed as a "landmark" case by campaigners, who said they hoped it would restore confidence in the justice system again. Terence Michael Tremarco (62) had originally been handed 456 hours of community service for nine grave and criminal assaults and one common assault, committed between 1994 and 2000.

Raising age of criminal responsibility ânot a good solutionâ in some cases, says UKÂ minister
Simply raising the age of criminal responsibility is "not a good solution" for complicated and extreme cases involving children, the UK's new Minister with responsibility for the Crown Dependencies has said. Frederick Ponsonby, Lord Ponsonby of Shulbrede, was in Jersey this week after being appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the UK's Ministry of Justice â a role that includes responsibility for constitutional relationships with the Crown Dependencies.Â

Health Minister accused of making islanders âsubjects of an experimentâ
Jersey's Health Minister has been accused of making islanders "the subjects of an experiment for which he has no evidence" as he brings in sweeping changes to the Health Department's structure with no public consultation, cost-benefit analysis, or looking for a comparable model elsewhere. Deputy Tom Binet faced pushback in the States Assembly this week against his reorganisation of the Health Department…

âInappropriate prescribingâ of antibiotics causing infections in Hospital
The Hospital has seen a rise in antibiotic-resistant infections caused by inappropriately-prescribed antibiotics, it has emerged. Speaking at a meeting of the Health Advisory Board yesterday, non-executive director and leading GP Dame Clare Gerada said the Quality, Safety and Improvement Committee was "quite concerned about the rise of C. difficile". C. difficile is an antibiotic-resistant infection with symptoms including diarrhoea.
