Glad you remember it! It was originally produced by my late Dad Iain after he visited the Treacle Mine museum in Sabden. I've put it all on YouTube now so it's easily accessible, and we're working on an audio drama follow up!

This walk from Wiswell (pronounced “Wizzle”) in #Lancashire takes you over the 1462 ft high Spence Moor and down into Sabden. Overall, it is an easy walk with a bit of a steep, though short climb back up to Wiswell Moor near the end. Details at tinyurl.com/4pxmwasd

No one outside of Lancashire knows about the Sabden Treacle Mines, do they.

Some of the best, most committed treacle mine japesters were from up the road. “The village of Sabden in Lancashire cultivated a considerable body of folklore about local treacle mining in the 1930s. The local newspaper helped foster the myth, publishing numerous stories about the fictitious mines.”

My dad was born in Sabden. Used to talk about the treacle mines quite a lot!

There are still treacle mines in Sabden, but yes, no commercial extraction is done these days. I believe the locals still mine a small amount for personal and local use.

We are deeply saddened to hear that Brian Trueman passed away on Sunday, aged 92. A hugely talented writer and a lovely man, Brian co-wrote The Treacle People with his son Jonathan, as well as lending his voice to Charlie and the nefarious Furness. He will be very sorely missed.
