We worked on this paper for about 10 years before finally seeing it in print. It connects with issues that have been central to the discipline of psychology for the last century ā but which, we argue, fell by the wayside due to a limited understanding of the nature of the self.

I was fortunate to meet Jimmy Carter when I was a postgrad at Emory U in 1986. It was clear then that he was a passionate advocate for human rights and for the transformative power of education. In the interests of his legacy, Iām glad he left us before Jan 20.
