I believe I just solved the mystery why eveybody believes the ALSFM in ALS120 based ISA cards sounds "accurate but muffled". Avance Logic seems to have integrated their stolen original OPL3 logic into the chip but all ALS120 cards only have (cheap) amplified speaker outs, no line outs.

Been hunting a card with real OPL4 for a while, but did not realize that my Yamaha TG100 is apparently using the very same patch set, just with some (a lot) reverberate activated by default. Let's see if there's a way to disable it! The TG100 is still a comparably cheap device and easy to find.

I am very pleased to say that the full version of the game does indeed NOT have the sound issue, so the only remaining problem is that the game runs about four times too fast. Which is not an issue at all, since the music's tempo is not affected! I can record it this way!

I wanted to record a bit of Hi Octane (1995)'s first track music (Amazon Delta Turnpike), but for some reason the demo does not apply having the sound FX set to 0 volume, so it's not worth recording like this, with explosions & race"cars" zooming by all the time. Also horribly speed sensitive game.

Gave away my 14" non-Trinitron CRT because I'd only use my flat Trinitron-based 21" Eizo F931 but in hindsight it was a mistake, now I can't compare between shadow mask & aperture grille. And the Eizo is too big to fit on this super cool 2.1 setup that woul ideally sit between a desktop case and CRT

Funnily enough, you could combine an ALS100+ with the AWE CT1920 to build the best AWE of all time lol, it doesn't even need more resources (aside from a second ISA slot) since the CT1920 only uses an IO address like 330, no IRQ or DMA.

And then I remembered, I *have* one of them. These "Diamond Technologies DT-0297" cards are rebadged Avance Logic ALS100+. It may look like the shittiest budget card to be avoided like the plague, but it sounds EXCELLENT and on this one the wavetable connector even allows for big daughterboards!

Really the only thing that could be better about this card is that some have the wavetable connector doesn't allow for big daughterboards. Although some versions of the card are higher or have the connector rotated 90 degrees (or in the low profile version 180 degrees) and that works fine.

We had already established that the ALS100+ has an original (albeit unlicensed and disguised) OPL3 chip for FM synthesis, and that these cards only have a bad reputation because some of them have low quality amps (which only matters if you don't use line out) and others perpetuated half truths. BUT!

The adventure game genre could actually be hit the least by this. AI can do slop stories and slop code, but is even more sh*t at thinking of riddles and least of all humor. And people who play adventures often appreciate hand-drawn graphics, too. Maybe we need a "certified AI-free" seal of quality.
