My new years post, which will not make sense to everyone, is that it is better to be on social media with a blog than without. Blog space is a place for me to stand outside the algos and vicissitudes of corporate social. Sure bsky is pretty chill and I love you all but this place isn't mine.

There is a long tradition of using apples as Xmas decorations stemming from medieval Paradise Plays where they symbolised the forbidden fruit Paradise trees often fir morphed Xmas trees in UK when Prince Albert introduced German Christmas traditions. The apples morphed into Christmas decorations.

Yeah, I'd agree that those are not 'Ashmead's Kernel'. Here's a few of ours this year, all much rounder, all at least partially russeted.

Anyone for 'apple ginger'? Gertrude Mackay's 1913 recipe should result in a thick apple butter, flavoured with ginger and lemon. Ideal for serving with your Christmas goose. Or if you don't have four hours to stand and stir, you could try my quick method instead.

Porterβs Perfection set heavy clusters of fruit and in the early weeks after bloom the stems and base of the hypanthium of fruitlets that are close together can physically fuse The resulting mature apple is therefore a compound apple with a lobulated shape due to unequal growth of the fused parts
