My 10yo (almost 11) really wants to go see Wicked 2. I haven't seen the musical or the movie, but I've heard it's iffy for kids. That said a lot of her friends have been to see it. Is there anything I should particularly be aware of to decide this? I'm leaning to taking her.

A thread about contests: I'm not sure I should make this because I don't want it to come across as sour grapes, but I want to share. I enter contests fairly often for fun. I almost always get long listed, and over 60% of the time, short listed. I haven't won in a while, but that's okay.

I've been rewatching an anime that I know has human produced subtitles. But because the streaming service has agreed to use AI auto generated ones instead, they are now frequently incomprehensible. For me, it's just annoying. But what if I was deaf and *needed* the captions? Now they suck.

I sometimes wonder if particularly onerous submission guidelines are particularly onerous on purpose. Like to discourage submissions, or to weed out people who don't follow them. It could be completely unrelated, but it's something I wonder about.

Any recommendations on something fun to watch with older elementary kids? We've seen classics, but they don't like watching anything scary or with violence. Thought I had one picked today that they'd be okay with, but they didn't like it. I just want something not Disney.

I am truly shocked to hear not just racist language, but language that is straight up white supremacist genocidal Nazi language coming from the highest levels of our government. Ten years ago I wouldn't have believed such a thing possible. How on earth did we get here?

Half of my family are immigrants and I seriously fear for them. So are most of my coworkers. And my best friend. I guess I just hope that most people see through the rhetoric and refuse to accept it. It's genocidal. Truly.

I will say this: I might have a lot of students who haven't turned in papers yet, but of the ones who did, only one did something that I suspect was AI, and that one referenced what we did in class enough that I know the student at least had some hand in it. I'm considering this a win.

I always send students messages when they have missing assignments to try to help get them on track. This time I also sent messages to the students with As thanking them for their hard work. Guess which ones responded? I think sometimes we forget how much it means to hear our work means something.

My kids are playing Astro Bot and this whole game is just very clever and cute.

My husband showed me a fun AI experiment. You know how it can supposedly describe what it sees with your phone camera? Well, if you ask it to describe what it sees, then turn the camera off and tell it you're walking into a different room, it will completely make up stuff.

I recorded 12 lessons worth of recordings and just realize that for the last 7 lessons my mic didn't work properly. 😭

We need to hold more adults to the standards we hold kindergartners to.

Law and Order was always one of my go-to random background noise shows and I love it, but I haven't been able to watch it in years because I don't have TV and it's not streaming. I just found out my Samsung TV has a Law and Order channel and it's lovely.

I've been watching crime shows lately again and one of the things I've noticed is when they're describing people, family often describe boys and girls, especially children, in very different ways. Girls/women are described as "beautiful," "obedient," "always did what she was told," etc.

Watching a crime show and I just have to say if someone decides to go by the nickname Hannibal maybe that's a bit of a red flag.

So if you were reading a book that had random internet posts/chat logs transcribed as part of the narrative, would you be put off by grammar/spelling errors/typos? Because I want to have some in there because it feels more authentic to me, but it also kind of goes against "neat and polished."

I'm a person who tends to drive to the closest dark sky I can find when there's a CHANCE of an aurora. If I look through my phone it's so bright pink that I feel like I'd be able to see it, but I can't tonight. Both heartbroken and glad I at least got to see it through a camera.

My not likely to actually go through new online class looks like it will have enough people to go through, which is a little bit ugh. It's going to be so much work. I'm hoping to at least get all the prep done before break so I don't have to lose my break doing work.

Does anyone know why my arrow down sometimes randomly goes from scrolling properly and requiring constant pressing over and over to get it to work? It keep switching and I don't know why. My delete is doing the same. Requiring one press per letter.
