I have a sincere question. Multiple students in my summer online course had hallucinated/fabricated references (to assigned materials) in their write up. I manually checked these. I gave them a list of what was hallucinated. I told them that this is serious. I marked down. I threatened reporting.

There are a lot of things to be worried about with AI, but meanwhile, while I sleep, AI is finding duplicate PDFs for me and also scraping YouTube videos that I have for the transcripts, while I get ready for bed.

Explaining some of my culture to my family.

I am finding ChatGPT agents to be useful. They are a better fit with the "intern" analogy than any former AI - requiring oversight, still saving lots of time overall. For example, I update an AI cost/performance chart frequently. The agent did all the grunt work, with guidance.

AI is great at shoehorning and omg, there are a lot of concepts being shoehorned in, in my summer grading.

I don't know if it is AI summary reading or using AI, but I've been getting a LOT of student work that embraces, entirely uncritically, perspectives that have been so heavily critiqued in the class... And not subtly. And it is so puzzling. Like, what on earth is going on? It is also hard to grade.

Now that we're fully in the era of students reading AI summaries (I think), it is sooooo weird to see what the students are producing. Like there is so much context missing. Don't get me wrong. I love AI for some stuff. If I need to read a Carfax, love AI. But this is heartbreaking to see.

Grading, even videos, in the AI era means sometimes listening to painful smoothies of concepts, not really engaged with.

I think that I've posted this before, but there is a unique emotion that comes from a student who is angry that their AI tool that they used for an assignment was wrong and they lost a LOT of points. Like they are genuinely angry and don't seem to take personal responsibility/accountability.

There is a particular kind of pain that occurs as a result of spending previous time on grading AI work. Like I really feel BAD.

I've been having students watch a particular video that is a bit outside of the scope of the module themes, but it makes some really good points in a compelling way. I even have annotations reminding students that this is why I'm assigning it. But oh, the AI-written responses to this DO NOT get it.
