Here’s a fuller view of the mosaic floor in the women’s changing room (apodyterium) at the Central Baths in Herculaneum. The monochrome floor mosaic depicts a marine scene featuring the spectacular octopus together with the sea god Triton, a cherub, dolphins, and a squid.

The central medallion was heavily restored in the 19th c. and some would argue many of the original details obscured. For example, Jesus is depicted as bearded here, whereas in many other early Christian depictions of the baptism (such as the one in the Arian baptistery) he is shown beardless.

hey, that me! I was only at the PIAC for one year as an auditor, but it was hands down THE most formative aspect of my graduate and professional education.

The PIAC was founded in 1925 by decree of Pius XI. Over the past century it has trained scores of archaeologists in the study of the catacombs, ancient basilicas, inscriptions, and other early Christian artifacts of Rome and beyond.
