BBC Radio Newcastle and Book Cover Reveal - My Writing Week
This week I began editing the first draft of my next novel The Bakery Girls. It'll be published in 2027 with Headline and you can pre-order it now right here. The cover has been done and I revealed it this week, to a wonderful reception. Many readers say it's their most favourite cover yet. I wrote an article on The Real Toffee Factory Which Inspired my Books. Read my article for Women Writers, Women Books at https://booksbywomen.org/the-real-toffee-factory-which-inspired-my-books/ I was interviewed on BBC Radio Newcastle by presenter Anna Foster about my new book. You can listen to the full interview on BBC Sounds here. There was a wonderful review of Celebrations at the Toffee Factory, out next week in paperback! - in The Blackpool Gazette which was syndicated to a great number of other local newspapers too. You can read the full review here. And I had the most wonderful evening at Sunderland College in their City Bistro. I was an invited guest to a special dinner to honour students who have been working on a heritage project in Sunderland. Well done to all involved. There was a raffle and I donated a hamper of books and chocolates. I crafted another episode of my weekly soap opera Riverside for The People's Friend magazine. I've been writing Riverside weekly since 2016. Dundee and D C Thomson - My Milestone Writing Week
This week I hit a milestone when I type THE END on the first draft of The Bakery Girls. However, there's still a long way to go with weeks of editing ahead, to get the draft into shape to send to my publisher Headline. This week I went out my author newsletter to my growing number of subscribers. You can read the newsletter online, it contains two competitions to win free goodies. Read it online here. Also this week I started gearing up to a month full of book launches. The first one is at Featherbed books on Thursday 21 May, which is the release day in paperback of my third and final saga in the toffee factory trilogy. All events are free, do come if you can. I'm also giving a talk at The Donnison School in Sunderland. This one has a ticket price of £5 and it's a fantastic venue and heritage centre to support. Buy your ticket here. The full list of all of my book launches and talks this month can be found on my website here. This week I had a short story published in The People's Friend magazine. It's a poignant story which came from a very emotional day I went through not so long ago. And in very exciting news this week I was invited in to the publishing house of D C Thomson in Dundee in Scotland. It's where The People's Friend magazine is published, the magazine which has printed my weekly soap opera Riverside for almost 10 years. What an incredible meeting I had there. I crafted another episode of my weekly soap opera Riverside for The People's Friend magazine. I've been writing Riverside weekly since 2016. Castle, Chocolate, Crime and Competitions - My Writing Week
This week I've continued to make good progress writing the first draft of The Bakery Girls. I aim to finish the book soon and then there's weeks of editing and rewriting to do. My author newsletter for May was sent to subscribers today. It has two competitions and some special news in it. Read it online here. I started to plan for the book launch of the final book in the Toffee Factory Girls trilogy. It's released on May 21 and is called Celebrations at the Toffee Factory. I visited a brand new Waterstones store in the Arnison Centre, Durham. It's wonderful to see new bookshops opening, and great to see my books on the shelves. This week I also gave a talk at Guisborough Library for World Book Night. It was a talk about my Scarborough cosy crimes and I really enjoyed it. I received some wonderful feedback too. Thank you to everyone who came and made the event so special. The winner was announced in my latest competition. Was it you? Find out here. My next Scarborough cosy crime comes out later this year. It's called Music to Die For at The Seaview Hotel. I was really happy to see it features in the Headline publishing catalogue of highlights for 2026. My local newspaper, The Sunderland Echo, has a competition to win 1 of 5 signed copies of Celebrations at the Toffee Factory. Enter to win here. Also this week, as a member of the Romantic Novelist's Association, I joined the local branch at a meeting held in Northumberland. It even had a castle! My new book is featured in In & Around Magazine. See page 13 of the magazine online for a competition to win signed books. I was delighted to see my books in a sponsored post on Amazon, organised by my publisher Headline. Buy the series here. My new book release was also featured in The Sunderland Magazine, thank you! You can read it all here. And finally, an extra walking tour of my book locations in Ryhope have been added for Saturday 23 May with tour guide Ian Mole. Interested? See the Facebook group. I crafted another episode of my weekly soap opera Riverside for The People's Friend magazine. I've been writing Riverside weekly since 2016. Culture House Sunderland, mental health and mini books
This week I've made more steady progress writing the first draft of The Bakery Girls and aim to be finished by end of May. It's a long process that can't be rushed as each day requires considerable concentration and hard work. I'm loving it a lot! I've also seen the cover but can't reveal it yet. It's incredible, and could be my favourite yet. Out of working hours, I went to the wonderful city of Durham for a tour of Redhills. This is the Durham Miners Association building known as the Pitmen's Parliament. Researching The Bakery Girls means eating cake. A tough job but someone's got to do it. In a cafe in Durham I ate Empire Biscuit, known as German Biscuit before WW1. It could be the inspiration for Sunderland's pink slice, layered shortbread, jam, (white) icing, jelly tot! I went on a tour of Sunderland's new Culture House, set to open this summer. I was overjoyed to see my books on the shelves of the library part of the building. It's going to be an incredible asset to the city and I hope will change the lives of many aspiring creative young people. I also celebrated one month to go before the release of Celebrations at the Toffee Factory. Order yours now at bit.ly/ToffeeCelebrations. I donated a bouquet of books to the Fans' Museum at Sunderland AFC to help raise funds for their men's mental health football team. Love to support a good cause. An extra tour was added to the walking tour of Ryhope on Saturday 23 May. If you're interested in seeing my book locations, please join the Facebook group here. And tomorrow I'll be at Guisborough Library. Please come and say hello and buy your ticket here. Finally this week, I have three competitions for you to enter! Enter to win Mini Bookcase of Glenda Young's books!https://flamingnora.blogspot.com/2026/04/enter-to-win-mini-bookcase-of-glenda.html Enter to win signed Celebrations at the Toffee Factory and toffees!https://flamingnora.blogspot.com/2026/04/enter-to-win-signed-book-and-toffees.html Enter to win Glenda Young signed book with chocolates!https://flamingnora.blogspot.com/2026/03/enter-to-win-glenda-young-signed-book.html I crafted another episode of my weekly soap opera Riverside for The People's Friend magazine. We're giving away five signed copies of Sunderland author Glenda Young's new book
The third in a trilogy based on a North East toffee factory is set to be released - and city author Glenda Young hopes it will be a sweet success. Telling the story of three young women who work together, and share secrets, in a sweet factory, The Toffee Factory Girls is from the pen of successful Sunderland author Glenda Young and is inspired by Horner's toffee factory and Dainty Dinah toffee of Chester-le-Street. Celebrations at the Toffee Factory, released at the end of May, is the third and final in the trilogy - and we have five signed copies to give away. It follows fun and feisty Elsie who longs for freedom and excitement. Hoping to meet the man of her dreams, she spurns the attention of dependable Stan. Will she realise that what she wants and what she needs are different things? Efficient Anne, meanwhile, takes control at the factory to change its fortunes after the war. She creates a new line of toffee. However, an unwelcome blast from Mr Jack’s past tries to jeopardise the factory’s success. And Hetty is torn when her sweetheart Dirk prepares to leave for his hometown in Belgium. At the same time, her old boyfriend Bob returns from the Front, determined to marry her. Who will Hetty choose? The book will be launched at independent bookshop Featherbed Books in Houghton on Thursday, May 21 from 12 – 2pm and all are welcome.
