🖤🕊️ These aren’t just remote anecdotes for me like for many of you. This is our lives as mentally ill Black people. Donte Melton was murdered in a city 30 minutes from me I go to all the time. I have survived police encounters in crisis, & folks like us knows that’s it’s only chance we weren’t him.

Yesterday marked a year since the death of Donte Melton. He was having a mental health crisis and sought out police for help.

I’m so excited about my chat with Sarah J. Jackson later today. Black people have always pushed journalism ahead in this country by telling the truth about it and I’m so glad she has taken the time to document their work.

"When the government comes down on you, it can destroy your life.” I’d conservatively estimate 5,000 Baltimore residents could say that exact phrase and their story is much more compelling than someone who invaded the Capitol trying to overthrow a free and fair election.
