As a music producer, there is absolutely nothing wrong with using presets; they generally sound great and can let you lay down an idea quickly. But if there is a particular type of sound you are looking for, you may be looking for a long time, and that gets in the way of your creative momentum.

How I made the bleeps & bloops for "Purpose Of The Machine" from the album "Echoes Of The Mechatronic Age". It's made up of two synth sounds. I programmed a series of patterns in the Matrix sequencer and automated it to switch each of the sounds to different patterns at different points.

Singer-songwriters: how do you come up with hooky vocals? I have no problem writing nice little instrumental lines, but when I try to imagine them as a vocal, it seems like it would fall flat. When I hear a good vocal melody, I’m amazed that someone was able to come up with that. How do you do it??

My music is instrumental but still tells stories. There is world building behind it that you can dig into on Bandcamp, if that’s of interest. I’m guessing the story side of it is inconsequential to most listeners, but I have found it interesting trying to tell a narrative without the use of lyrics.

I recently discovered that Apple Music for Artists shows stats on radio plays, for both internet and terrestrial stations. You can even see which specific stations are playing which songs! It's also where you go to see how many people Shazam your songs, and which ones! What a time to be alive!
