Update: supposedly there is finally toner at least for now, and also that it’s an issue at *multiple* schools. ACPS leadership needs to resolve this in a lasting way and the school board should stay on top of them about it.

For further context, we’re hearing from PHK8 parents that there’s no toner at the school and only one functioning copier so students aren’t getting homework because they can’t print or copy.Where is CO and the school board when a school’s got no toner in the first month of school?

Hey ACPS parents, how many functioning copiers does you kid’s elementary school have? West End parents are trying to figure out something.

A school board member said ACPS doesn’t have a problem with transportation. Have they EVER spoken to a parent? And didn’t they repeatedly say that transportation was a problem that meant West End overcrowding couldn’t be solved? Time to recruit school board candidates.

It’s a new school year but the same old ACPS leadership playbook that continues to demand a blank check with no accountability. No problems ever actually solved. Will the school board do its job this year? I’m not holding my breath

This west end parent was taking a break from social media and trying to stay sane over the summer. How are we feeling West End parents? Ready for school? Attacked by the aggressive ParentSquare barrage this week? Do your kids even have a teacher this year?

It’s so nice to see that they are putting in a board that reflects our city. 🙄 Shall we start bets now on whether any program panels will include young people, non-native English speakers, renters, condo dwellers, bus riders, or anyone making under 6 figures?

Redistricting is on a lot of people’s minds today but I also want to lift up a public comment last night from a West End Parent urging ACPS & the board to fix the lack of a water source for Patrick Henry K8’s community garden.

The school board & ACPS says over and over again as much as they want that they’re looking out for the west end and whole city but these choices - action and no action in some cases - tell the truth of which voices they actually feel beholden to.

I guess credit to School Board member Abdalla for standing up against the group think that led to the really unfortunate middle school map that just got approved.

Stopped by Mediterranean Market (as one does on a West End Sunday) and witnessed this proud immigrant owned biz tell a first responder their pita was on the house. Immigrants are what make the West End, and this country, great.

Catching up on last week’s ACPS school board meeting. The ability of school board members to bend & twist themselves into justifying avoiding the necessary need to divide the MS boundary down Quaker really shows which parents they value. (And thx to Reyna, Abdalla, Harris for pushing back on it.)

It’s great to see West End parent voices finally breaking through in this city. The author is right. Redistricting shouldn’t gerrymander our schools into socioeconomic siloes. They should ensure all our schools reflect the diversity this city allegedly prides itself on.

City teams are working to address damage from this evening’s storm. Be sure to stay AT LEAST 30 feet away from any downed poles, power lines, or trees. Use 311 to report damage and 911 for immediate health and safety concerns.

Sometimes I end up on the other side of town and see how many of the kids and their parents are leisurely walking along safe sidewalks to the schools, with the help of crossing guards. We want that on the West End. Our parents would love to have safe ways to walk to school.

West End, we need some ice cream shops. Though we do host all the ice cream trucks and the paleteros in our parks beat any of these places imho.

Shout out to the Patrick Henry parent speaking on ACPS redistricting who said that their school's immigrant families silence is NOT agreement. This process has been overwhelming in its disenfranchisement of anyone who doesn’t fit the white collar, middle class power structures of this city.

ACPS Redistricting really showing how much some people in this city freak out about the idea of their kids going to certain West End elementary and middle schools. These are great schools. You may not be saying the quiet part out loud, but we’re not dumb. We see what you’re thinking.

So new “shape” maps replace prior “color” maps. And “color” maps are maybe now off the table. Just so happens that all new “shape” maps all happen to satisfy the public outcry of one particular neighborhood that is relatively wealthy. I’m sure that’s just a coincidence, right? 🙄 #ACPSRedistricting

It took too long, but I’m glad to see that the ACPS redistricting website finally appears to have functioning translations. Credit where credit is (sort of) due. Still not on the maps though, so...

Hope the school board remembers that this process has not been accessible to a lot of the non-wealthy, non-white, limited English proficiency families on the West End most affected and who are not getting LTEs or interviews in the press.

We just want to be able to walk in our West End neighborhoods without being killed or seriously injured by cars. Also a human doesn’t collide with a car. A car hit that person.

Traveled Duke, Pickett, and Edsall Road on both foot and bike today and made it home without being hit by a car, so I bought myself a little chocolate bar as a treat for surviving another day on the Dangerous Streets* of the West End. *Car drivers are the most dangerous thing over here.

Y’all. Mi gente. My people. ALX Bluesky. Patrick Henry has more than 1,000 students. The largest elementary BY FAR, and some of the greatest need, and its PTA hasn’t even hit $500 yet today. I KNOW you all love our food and breweries over here. LOVE OUR KIDS, TOO. I just donated, will you?

Anyway, when mostly middle class and upper middle class English speaking parents show up to fight for their interests, I hope the school board will recognize that HALF the stakeholders have been excluded from this community process. Half.

I thought I’d check back in on this and guess what? Still not translated. How is it that the resource strapped Title I schools and PTAs on the west end can somehow manage to translate *everything* into 4-6 languages but not ACPS when it comes to redistricting?

Lots of good causes to give to for Spring2Action, but I’m gonna ask you to give to the Patrick Henry PTA. As long as our schools are so socioeconomically segregated, Title I schools on the West End have bigger barriers to raising funds, and lots of need. www.spring2action.org/organization...
