Today is International Shark Day! Sharks are over 550 species that come in many shapes and sizes, from the minuscule 20 cm long dwarf lanternshark to the almost 100 times longer whale shark. Amazing! (but not a surprise, which was ruined by their names).

We are now starting the second part of the #NFR_HITLICE project on Senja, Northern Norway, where we infect migrating salmon smolts with salmon lice and tag them with acoustic transmitters with predation sensors to investigate the vulnerability to predation 🐟

We've installed a PIT antenna in Nidelva to track returning Atlantic salmon smolts tagged last year through our #NFR_HITLice project. Smolts were infested with sea lice before release. Low discharge makes drilling the antenna to the riverbed easier, still a river with 3–4°C makes it quite tough!

Acoustic telemetry reveals the small spotted catshark (Scyliorhinus canicula) is most active at night and relies on inshore waters, especially females. Small MPAs may not fully protect them. Larger MPAs and nighttime fishing bans could improve conservation. 🦈🌊 doi.org/10.1002/aqc.... #sharks

On the third evening of our writing retreat, we all joined in on starting a new manuscript for the #NFR_LOST project 🦈 Within a few hours we’d sketched out a good first draft. Very motivating to work on the same manuscript simultaneously!
