This year, we watch in horror as the Israeli government uses US-provided weapons to carry out genocide, ethnic cleansing, and apartheid in the name of Jewish safety.

Today is Nakba Day, when we commemorate the roughly 750,000 Palestinians who were forcibly displaced by Zionist militias during the 1948 Palestine War. Acknowledging the Nakba and making restitution is the precursor to building a better future for everyone living in the region.

Many Jews and many Israelis oppose the actions of the state of Israel. It is antisemitic to ignore this fact — just as it is Islamophobic and anti-Arab to suppress the history of the Nakba.

The Palestine exception to free speech leaves our community vulnerable to the Trump administration’s attacks. We see it with the targeting of students across the country, including close to home against Rümeysa Öztürk and Mahmoud Khalil.

For thousands of years, Jews have celebrated Passover and told the story of Exodus as a reminder that we have not always been free. Our tradition instructs us to gather around the Seder table to share a meal of joy and liberation.

We know from our history that our safety as Jews is intertwined with the safety of all marginalized groups. In the words of Jewish poet Emma Lazarus, “Until we are all free, we are none of us free.”

This weekend, IfNotNow leaders and Jewish community members showed up at No Kings rallies throughout the country, to make clear: Militarism never makes any of us safer — whether it’s fascist ICE violence in our streets or reckless bombing campaigns abroad.
