I've seen several times in "tips on how to make money with art" the idea that commissions are just a staring point and the big money comes more from projects for big companies, personally, have no interest in abandoning commissions to try to pursue a career in some big company

I ended up accumulating a lot of knowledge about niche things that don't have a wide reach, which often makes me feel distant and like I don't belong to any groups. When requests come up for me to be a tester for some game or text, it gives me an important feeling of validation.

Being invited to be a beta tester for two VNs games made me happy. I already do beta reading of friends' texts which somehow validates the knowledge I have, which I always considered unimportant.
