I waited 14 months for a publisher to issue a contract with a "no AI" clause (it had to be all lawyered, whatever). I'd do it again. I'm not agreeing to AI covers, audio, translations, blurb, anything. We stand together or we fall apart.

Answers to common questions and concerns regarding the ongoing video game voice actor strike 💕 (1/7) 🧵

*taps the sign with incomprehensible force* Any video game can bring back their FULL voice cast IMMEDIATELY during the strike, once they agree to enforceable AI protections via a SAG interim agreement, and the game CAN still keep its non-union actors after doing so.

I have also asked for some form of AI Protections before I can resume work, both out of care/concern for my career as well as to support my colleagues in solidarity who have asked for the same. Take that knowledge how you will.

John isn't the only Hoyoverse actor who has requested AI protections before they could resume work on their character. However, they ARE the next known instance of an actor being replaced because they would not waver from that request. This is a decision made by the game developer, NOT the studio.

As a reminder, if the Hoyoverse games were to sign a SAG-AFTRA Interim agreement & flip union... non-union actors would NOT be recast. Due to the US Taft-Hartley Act of 1947 which affects all US unions, NU actors would ABSOLUTELY be able to continue working on a flipped union project.

SAG-AFTRA is only as strong as its members. It’s a non prof org that provides legal protection for its members, continually collaborates on contracts that reflect the financial state of the world that also keep members safe within the ever changing industry.

“NU actors will all be fired!” Respectfully, HUH?! I don’t know where this got picked up from but it’s not true. Every actor starts out NU and the typical career growth is either becoming a Union actor or Ficore. Every production is capable of hiring every swathe of talent.

Regardless of how any of us feel very talented actors were recast because they were striking for enforceable AI protections. They are the few that have been vocal, but this has been happening since the start of the strike.

“SAG is bad!” “All NU actors will be fired if games flip” “Random-bro on YouTube said-“ “Reddit user gojosprincess10 said-“ ANXIETY STOP!!!

i know it happened a long, long time ago. but the moment entertainment and creative fields became about profit margins and happy shareholders, was the moment the spirit of art began to die.

Non-union actors are just as much a part of the strike as anyone, if they choose to strike. A strike isn’t some orderly procedure done because you fit into a category. An industry is being threatened. Everyone in it is affected. Saying “well you aren’t even union” misses the point entirely.

Currently, only a SAG interim agreement can effectively do that, as it would be backed by the union’s legal resources, and can meet any violation by a big company on the appropriate scale. That’s why actors are holding the line, and why outrage at a recording studio ain’t it.

This is what we mean by “enforceable” AI protections. Because while we are deeply grateful for any recording studio’s personal support in this strike, the fact remains they do not have the power or resources to protect us, or meaningfully enforce any AI clauses in their contracts

B) If the developer does violate the AI protection clauses in that contract, then the burden of enforcement would be on the actor. Often, that means one guy having to lawyer up against a multi-million/billion dollar company.

A recording studio may offer AI protections in its own contract with the actor, but this ultimately means very little, because A) the developer owns the final recordings, not the recording studio. They cannot dictate how the developer uses that audio.

If you’re just learnin about the video game strike, I wanna clarify a key detail I’ve seen get distorted a lot: Generally, the *developer* decides whether to sign an interim agreement, not the recording studio. Often, the studio is only a middleman. They do not set this term.

There are many contracts out there with AI protections, but only SAG Interim & Tiered Budget Contracts provide actors with a legal team to enforce the contract at no cost. Legal fees are expensive, and many actors would have to go into debt to enforce our own contracts if they were violated.

This is likely not the only Hoyoverse project in which actors have been unable to reprise their roles because they requested to have essential AI protections in place before they could willingly accept the work. This is also potentially not the only Hoyoverse project to have recasts over this fact.

Proxies - I'm learning about this as you are and I share your shock. Neither HoYoverse nor Sound Cadence has communicated with me since October. I've been fully available and recorded multiple voice jobs in that time. I am trying to learn more and absorb this news.

This is what I've been quiet about. I'm not SAG but what game companies want to do with AI is an existential threat. I took a personal stand to ask for protection, and had to be willing to give up the best thing that's ever happened in my professional life. I stand by my choice.
