I first subscribed to the @washingtonpost.com when I arrived at DC for college in 1986. I cut my subscription in around 2020 when it was clear it was heading off a cliff. Hard to see a DC institution like the Post pounded into gravel and grit.

As an Eagle Scout who came up through military scouts, I can say it would be a great tragedy to lose Scouting on bases, because it's a place kids who get moved around a lot can make friends easily. And it would be a greater tragedy to give in on the 'values' issue after BSA has come so far.

Interesting bit from my current read: Of the Presidents who served in World War II, five served in the Pacific in some capacity (JFK, LBJ, Nixon, Ford, Bush) and only one in Europe (Eisenhower). Not sure that this means anything, but it is odd given the force ratios (2.4 million ETO/2 million PTO).

Finished 'Staircase in the Woods' by @chuckwendig.bsky.social. Like all good horror novels, there's plenty of external horror in a giant haunted [redacted]. But like the best horror novels, the real horror is within the protagonists and antagonists., and that's what they have to face. Good read.

I have to admit I haven't thought about the war crime of perfidy since writing about Otto Skorzeny in law school. I was in law school, to be clear; Skorzeny was 'Hitler's commando' put on trial for, among other things, having his troops wear American uniforms during the Battle of the Bulge.

Remember the old pilot's adage: red over red over red over red and you're really, really dead.

Book 1: Inhibitor Phase by Alastair Reynolds. A nice work of sci-fi which hits a sweet spot somewhere between hard sci-fi and space opera. A set of interesting characters, a very cool spaceship, and a remorseless enemy trying to wipe out what's left of humans. What more can you ask for?

So I heard about Bob Weir’s death while watching my son’s Dead tribute band. They quickly changed the playlist to add ‘He’s Gone.’
