What Black people do on this holiday hasn't changed. we gather (which was illegal for most of US history), sit, reckon with our existences vis-a-vis the surrounding power structure, and appreciate each other. It ain't all serious lectures either. You can do that at a cookout, blazed out your skull.

This society gonna do what it always does, absorbing and flattening Black cultural expressions to comfort itself. But it's worth remembering that the kinds of smaller regional celebrations from before federal recognition still persist.
