SNAP nightmare is over, the trauma from it remains with helpers & the families affected. Please don't stop donating $, food & time to your local pantries, hunger is still at an all time high. We received this today when we picked up the pantry order. I wish I could share it with all of the helpers.

Polis' net worth is $300 million+ & he's asking us to drop off food to a mansion owned by the state. He may be unaware that his newsletter goes out to everyone, even SNAP recipients on his mailing list. He is unable to read a room because he's not in the room with us. He is completely out of touch.

βI liken it to extending a lease,β Crank said. βIf youβre at the end of your lease and you still havenβt moved out, but your landlord says, βWell, I wouldnβt mind getting another month of rent,β you extend the lease for a month. You donβt try and add things into the existing lease.β--Rep. Jeff Crank

I've emailed with a few Denver City Council and there is interest in Denver to follow JeffCo if the shutdown gets extended. JeffCo, working with food pantries, tracks data to allocate resources where they are most needed. This will be useful even after the crisis & can be replicated statewide.

Asked if the shutdown was worth it, Sen. John Hickenlooper replied, βYeah, I think so.β He argued that Democrats forced people to βpay attentionβ to the fact that healthcare affordability is a βtraumatic, in many cases, life or death situation all over this country.β

Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS) will start loading payments onto (EBT) cards and SNAP participants will begin to see payments on their EBT cards as early as Saturday, November 8. All SNAP participants can expect their full payments to be available over the next few days.

Last week during the county meeting with food pantries, we had 1 person breakdown. This week we had 3. Our helpers are really hurting out here while they try to feed people. We're doing our very best, I promise. Some of us pick up food in our own vehicles for our pantries, like we do every Fri.

On Thursday members of the JBC asked "since we're meeting with Polis tomorrow, can we ask him to increase the amount of funds to help with SNAP cuts. The answer was no, because the proposal can't be amended. Looks like the answer is no because he won't be there.

At the JBC meeting Senator Kirkmeyer wanted to get food pantries $50 million, from emergency not general funds and wants the Governor to declare a state of emergency so that county emergency management can assist with logistics. But the proposal couldn't be changed. The $10 million passed.

Doing our food bank order for our food pantry this week. The only free offerings are: winter squash, water, ketchup packets. The rest we have to buy. As far as we know, our pantry won't even qualify for the extra food that will be bought if the JBC approved the $10 million emergency funds.

Polis won't give direct assistance to SNAP recipients because DT won't reimburse it. It's going to be all on the charitable food system. Hopefully he will at least declare an emergency so that logistics can be coordinated. Let's hope that there isn't violence at the grocery stores & pantries. π€

Did you know that many food pantries purchase their food from food banks? In the Denver metro, many food pantries go to the Food Bank of the Rockies warehouse with personal vehicles to pick up their orders. Not sure the on the logistics of providing 10x the need with 0% of the assistance.

The State of Colorado's current solution for SNAP cuts is to urge people to donate to food pantries. Yes please donate but that is not an adequate solution. If we're going to be required to be the solution, then the state needs to open up reserve funds to help us to do it, at least.

Removing 12% of the food economy will affect everyone's food prices but more importantly, how do you think the most disadvantaged people will react to literal food being taken out of their children's mouths? If he doesn't TACO on SNAP, holiday & grocery shopping will become Mad Maxish.
