'Sea Mist at the Strand' A wonderful mornings sunrise when sea mist softened the horizon and the scene turned ethereal. Taken on New Year’s Eve back in 2019, just months before the world went into lockdown.

"Advent" should have a chapter in "The Screwtape Letters" - time to be happy, to spend money, to get blinded by lights, "all I want for Xmas"... and *that* is exactly the best to distract me from what really matters. Advent is a hard season: am I ready for when Jesus is coming? do I have real hope?

The person that brought me back through his words, acts, attitude and faith. How can I ever forget him or thank God enough for the gift? Returning to the purity of the message of Jesus is scary; probably why so many criticised him: fear of the unknown, loss of the "security" of pomp and rituals.

'Strong Catholic identity' is widely interpreted as meaning 'reactionary' or 'conservative'. Authentic Catholic education must promote a post-Vatican II understanding of Church, emphasising links between faith & practice (<- Catholic Social Teaching) and preferential care for the poor & vulnerable.

Tomorrow is the start of the “new year” for Christians - not the Cesar date. And finishing the year, the image of the scripture with 3 crosses: one with the spirit and salvation, one with hope of redemption and one with attachment and to earthy values and despair. Which one do I want to be mine?
