Thoughts while drawing: Your life reflects your internal state, not the other way around. Your state is the lens through which your world is seen, so your view of life dictates your life. It's simple to understand, but then the work starts!

It cannot be overstated how weird & groundbreaking THE MAXX was upon release. It was this crazy culture grenade, bridging the Venn diagram between mainstream comics & Alt (not indie) comics. In an era of anti-heroes, The Maxx satirized that, redefining what mainstream comics could be. RIP Sam Kieth.

When I’m drawing conversation, connection between characters is important. This is not as obvious an insight as you may think. Artists can fall into the trap of being obsessed with exciting staging more than the feeling between human beings in the scene.

I got Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz’s Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States by @paulpeartsmith.bsky.social for Fathers Day, and it is an eye-opening, super-informative graphic interpretation that is gorgeously drawn. It’s sadly applicable to our world today, and I highly recommend reading it!
