Now that I think about it, you can make a similar argument regarding the German language in a global context: Namely, since Germany had ALSO unified in the later 19th century (i.e., 1871), coupled with losing its colonies in Africa (🇳🇦🇹🇬🇨🇲🇧🇮🇷🇼🇹🇿) after WW1, it never had much room to spread its language.

Namely, I was asking: Could the relatively small proportion of global Italian speakers be caused by the fact that Italy had unified in 1861 (which was relatively later when compared to OTHER European nation-states such as 🇬🇧🇫🇷🇪🇸🇵🇹), meaning that the Italian diaspora REALLY didn't identify as Italians?
