Now that I think about it, you can make a similar argument regarding the German language in a global context:
Namely, since Germany had ALSO unified in the later 19th century (i.e., 1871), coupled with losing its colonies in Africa (🇳🇦🇹🇬🇨🇲🇧🇮🇷🇼🇹🇿) after WW1, it never had much room to spread its language.
