: Not all rice blight is the same. We created a diagnostic kit that identifies the precise Xoo strain in blight-ridden rice plants. This allows to inform planting strategies and means resistance to be locally matched. Read more on how it works:

PCR or short-read sequencing may miss partial insertions from transformation vectors. Such fragments could reclassify plants as GMOs, with major regulatory and reputational risks. Long-read WGS captures entire insertion regions, and eliminates false positives.

Genome editing can revolutionize agriculture, but only if we ensure it is safe and transparent. Our comment in Nature Biotech highlights why long-read whole genome sequencing should be the standard to confirm that genome-edited plants are free of foreign DNA. 🔗

For the Healthy Crops project, this is a welcome signal. We develop disease-resistant rice varieties using exactly these techniques, helping smallholder farmers in Asia and Africa protect their harvests. 🌾

🌾 Historic day for food science in Europe! The EU Parliament just adopted new rules for New Genomic Techniques (NGTs): genome-edited plants similar to conventionally bred ones will now face lighter regulation! A clear pathway from lab to field.

Very pleased to have finally got this out there - many years work by the team - primarily Dana Vlad. Discovered that large vein ranks are actively repressed to allow smaller veins to develop. All grasses we looked at are the same. Allowed us to change patterns in rice - not quite C4 rice but closer

Congratulations to Yugander & our Laurence Albar's team to the publication on rice lines resistant to rice yellow mottle virus by genome editing (
doi.org/10.1111/pbi....
). Notably loss of CPR5.1, but not CPR5.2 , causes resistance. In contrast to Arabidopsis mutants shows no lesion mimic phenotype.
