I finally did it… the gorgeous Amanita border from @bowerbox.com that I’ve been sitting on for over a year was put to use last night. One of the things that made me take a bit longer was the whole mushroom murderer thing, but why should she spoil mushrooms for everyone?

How i know it's getting to the end of summer: the dehydrator is full of cherry tomatoes, the freezer is full of pesto, my counter is full of various pickles, and I'm doing anything but finishing my syllabi.

These are the most disgusting case pulls I've ever had to clean, the bottom channel for the label was completely full of crud. They should paint up nice though. #letterpress

So I guess when I was moving my new cabinet in, I bashed it against the door handle and now I can't unlock the door and am locked out of my shop. Great.

New cabinet for holding my boxes of type! I have had this for a year in storage, finally painted it and cleaned it up. I'm hoping it will hold all the type that's currently on galleys on top of the other little press and all over the shop. Originally meant to hold linotype mats. #letterpress

This is 9792+ pieces of freshly cast type! Each galley is about 26 pounds, made from my own designs. 3 hot, sweaty, stinky days of standing at the caster, feeding it old type, and constant oiling. Next up is packing into fonts, printing labels, and packaging so you can print with it. #letterpress

The mold was fixed, the machine is happy, and I've cast 4 full galleys of my new border. I'm hot and tired but there is still more to do! #typecasting #letterpress

Good and bad news from the foundry; the mat looks great and I'm very pleased with the design! But the water was running extra hot and slow so we tried to clear the water line, and only got it more clogged. So tomorrow will be some troubleshooting in the morning- I've got to learn it some time...

This is the new matrix I engraved last night. It will cast on an 18 point quad and can be rotated or used as a border. I'll be testing this later and hopefully it will turn out as i envision! #typecasting #engraving #letterpress

Just squished my absolute nemesis

🌱 Got some weeding done, put down more mulch and cardboard in the paths, and enjoyed my happy flowers in this short respite from the heatwave. Even though the garden is still mostly chaos it makes me (and the bees) happy

This but for obsolete and obscure printmaking techniques... wood type post for the wood type person. Punch cutting post for the punch cutter, type casting post for the typecaster...

Remembering a summer solstice a long time ago, standing ankle deep in Lake Manitoba 30 feet from shore, with a canoe full of beer and a personal tornado of mosquitos above each person's head, a bonfire on the beach, talking about science with researchers. I think it stayed light until 10:30.

I make type. Then I rub type. Every piece, across a file, on all 4 sides (for this design at least, I got smarter on new designs.)
