In 1617, Joris Carolus was commissioned by the Noordsche Compagnie - a Dutch whaling cartel - to lead a voyage of discovery. The mission was apparently successful, with the discovery of two new islands. The first he named Nyeu Hollandt, while the other he named Opdams Eylandt.

Recently we were talking a lot about the surgeon on the Mary Rose, and how he was a member of the Company of Barbers and Surgeons. The 1542 painting by Hans Holbein the younger, King Henry VIII and the Barber Surgeons, is even believed to potentially feature our surgeon!

Despite the Mary Rose being listed as carrying over 5,000lb (2.2 metric tons, nine pigs or 1,500 human brains) of gunpowder, and carrying over 91 guns of various sizes, we didn't actually find any sign of a powder store. Wonder what happened to it all?

It was wasn’t until the reign of Henry VIII (1509–1547) that significant anti-piracy laws were enacted. Originally titled An Act for Pirates and Robbers on the Sea issued in 1535, it was renamed The Offences of Sea Act in 1536.
