Pulling Teeth
TFW someone has bought comics Reading comics has generally been a pretty solitary activity for me. As a kid, most of the people I knew either weren't into comics at all, weren't as into comics as I was, or, you know, just plain didn't like me. Feeling actually connected to the rest of fandom in any sort of direct way is a relatively new thing to me, and I still don't really have a handle on it, or get as deeply involved fandom culture as I perhaps could.

I think it's time for a reread. I haven't read even a fraction of Superman's tales compared to Jon, but All-Star Superman is definitely my favorite among them. The Morrison/Quitely duo is masterful.

I swear I don't really plan on this feature being all-Conan, all the time. But as I've been making my way through the omnibus collection of the original Marvel series, the thief/reaver/slayer with gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth has been on my mind a lot lately, and a batch of stories I've landed on featuring the return of an old enemy as well as the general state of things brought a certain panel to mind.

Yesterday, the comics community was rocked by the news of the passing of writer-editor and former Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter. Saying that Shooter's legacy is complicated is a bit of a cop out, but ultimately, there's no other way to describe it succintly. I never met the man and only knew him through his work and through the often-contradictory stories told about him by the creators who worked with him, some who remembered him fondly, others who...didn't.
