Deeply curious about the new Wuthering Heights adaptation because over the course of many years and many tries, friendly AND scholarly discussions: The Brontes Are Not For Me ™️ I know this. And yet…

For the first time in (I would guess) a decade, I am not going to set a reading goal for 2026. I’m tired of quantifying. I’m tired of trying to meet and surpass arbitrary expectations. I will continue to log what I read, but I will—perhaps—read more organically for myself.

We’ve been reading stories about 🐊 crocodiles (an inadvertent theme) Started with Under the Great Plum Tree by Sufiya Ahmed & Reza Dalvand (India), then The Hunterman and the Crocodile by Baba Wagué Diakité (Mali) & concluding with I, Crocodile by Fred Marcellino (French Empire) Solid lessons all

This entire grift relies on convincing people that they don't know how to do the things they have always known how to do, and ironically, if it works, we will, in a very short amount of time, forget how to do all the things we have always known how to do.

So, EQAO results… I can tell you without the fancy inquiry committee that the way they’re requiring math be taught—that the scope of curriculum—is not working. They need to fundamentally change the curriculum expectations AND allow teachers to teach what works. Now: put the $$$ back into schools.

Faery Realms are one of today’s preoccupations so, as we march merrily along into the Yuletide season when some invite those wretched Surveillance Elves into their homes, may I simply opine: put a bit of cold iron in your pocket or mount that horseshoe at your door above the festive wreath.

New MMI piece: We look at the 3.5 million people in Canada who live in a home that is too small to meet their needs, and how a mismanaged push by governments and urban planners towards densification is at odds with the human right to housing. Read here:

We have a 100+ year old book that is a photographic history of WWI. Students are mesmerized by it. How did they take the photos? Could they zoom? Is that a cannon? Are those *real* dead people? Why isn’t anything in colour? Look at the moustaches!!! We read the captions & learn together.

There are lots of things in education world that seem to be up for discussion. Those that get traction usually astonish me because they are by no means universal, but the people experiencing them think that they are. 1 Ministry: 72 Boards And each one different

I had to read The Hobbit in high school and this was precisely why I couldn’t get into Tolkien as a whole. Look—there’s lots to enjoy about “classics” if you organically find them. But we aren’t conditioned anymore to walk into a bookshop/library and just BROWSE.

I started off by reading books I found in bookstores that sounded cool. Why would you ever want to do anything different? It's not sci-fi class. It's just reading. Read books. Any books. Literally any book you want to read. What a wild idea.

If I have to explain to you why it's a bad idea to use a machine that makes shit up 15-80% of the time AND destroys the environment AND contributes to rising fascism and genocide AND puts brilliant skillful creatives out of work by stealing their work, then we're already speaking different languages

We all know we shouldn’t judge books by their covers, however, I personally do not like or respond with engagement to current book cover trends. Browsing library Libby shelves and just turned off by all of the pastel-melon cartoons and black-cover florals with stark shimmery 3-wore fonts.

The focus on "AI Literacy" is particularly baffling, because guess what: it's just literacy! You can't use LLMs reliably unless you know what you're talking about. And the best way to actually learn something is to—you guess it—do your own work instead of having Chat-GPT do it for you.
