The way in, if you're stuck in a writing project, isn't always the most obvious way. For me, it's re-reading a passage I like, sketching out a character description, brainstorming a part of the story I'm excited about. Low bars = a way in.

The way I start to multi-task as the holidays pick up and I'm (all at once) completing work and getting food ready and writing my novel and posting on social media and excitedly announcing things to whoever will listen and cleaning and pacing is just...I feel superhuman (for better or worse)!

Pluribus is profound. The ideas it’s putting forth. The concepts it’s exploring. The tightness of the storytelling. The cause/effect way it moves from scene to scene and episode to episode. The many multiple readings possible. This is film/TV at its most powerful. Highly recommend.

Just downloaded the Scrivener iPhone app, synced everything via Dropbox, and now I'm walking around with my three novel projects (& short story collection) in my pocket & couldn't be happier. There is something about having my creative work right there and always accessible that fuels its creation.

I'm blessed or cursed (can't decide which) with working on multiple (read: many) projects at once & I was having a hard time focusing on one because I need a solid, plausible working title to really invest - & I figured it out yesterday and man what a difference! A good title: secret to motivation.

I’m thinking of creating a pre-dawn “Darkest Hour” writing club, specifically for writers trying to get books finished, but really for anyone determined to get up and write in the early hours. If you’d be interested in taking part, comment below and I’ll share more details as it comes together!

Just gave my (in-progress novel) characters enneagram types, and it's maybe the best thing I could have done to make sense of their complicated dynamics. It was also strangely obvious what types they were. Anyone else do this, or something similar?

Spent yesterday learning the ropes of Scrivener and moving my two novel projects over there. Google Docs has served me well, and still does with short fiction, but these story worlds and plots are too complicated, and I need some of the Scrivener features. So far, so good!

Finished final edits last night on my forthcoming short story in One Story (editor Karen Friedman is a brilliant sorceress of her craft). It will be the December issue of One Story! If you subscribe, I can't wait for you to read it! I think it adds something interesting to the AI conversation.

Loved being a Visiting Writer earlier this week at The Williston School, in Easthampton MA! I taught a lesson on speculative fiction & gave a reading to a very full house, in what felt like a Hogwarts hall! Big thanks to the students and faculty for being so welcoming!

Stuck in your writing project? Never underestimate the power of the smallest engagement with your story: read a paragraph, think about it while on a walk, record your thoughts. The smallest engagement can crack open the door to breakthroughs & flow. Whenever you struggle, lower the bar for yourself.

Just got an acceptance from The Arctic Circle Residency! I'll be going to Svalbard in July to work on the final voyage sections of my mermaid novel, on a tall ship in the Arctic Ocean (between Norway & the North Pole!) & I couldn’t be more excited for this merging of writer-self and adventurer-self.

I need to be able to see the possibility in a piece of writing in order to invest myself in it and the process. That process, for me, is often a wild balancing between this (which leads me to go back and polish the beginning) and the need to let it be messy and fragmented and move toward completion.

Looks like I'll definitely be at #AWP26 in Baltimore in March! Three panels accepted, one that I'll be moderating (Speculating the Machine), with some of my favorite writers. Keep us on your radar if you're going to AWP and want to talk dystopias, AI, & teaching genre fiction!

Thinking about the balance between the plot moving, & what the reader needs to know to care (especially in a speculative story, where context is needed).

Anyone have a theory as to why the words flow better on rainy days? Is this true for most writers?
