The House passing an anti-trans medical bill yesterday and the Department of Health and Human Services announcing new rules for gender affirming care for youth means that a tough year for trans people ends on an even more difficult note.

1. The federal government has just attempted to enact a national trans youth care ban. A new HHS rule would shutter most gender-affirming care for trans youth nationwide. It violates multiple laws and the constitution, and will likely go into effect in a few months. Our latest story here:

The outgoing Georgia congresswoman was able to successfully make transgender young people a target as one of her last acts in Congress.

4. It’s a familiar threat—one that appeared throughout House appropriations bills earlier this year and hung over transgender people for the duration of the previous shutdown fight.

3. The Wall Street Journal reports that one Republican being pushed by some Republicans is a demand to strip transgender health care from plans receiving ACA subsidies, a move that could significantly restrict access for transgender people nationwide who rely on subsidized plans for their care.

2. Many transgender people felt a momentary relief when a short-term CR ended the shutdown without any anti-transgender provisions, pushing the next deadline to Jan. 30. But that deal—struck between a handful of moderate Democrats and Republicans—was never a final word.
