The compute shader that maps ascii characters into a rendertexture was the complicated part. Once you have that you can draw *anything* that can be represented on a grid. This projects rays from the "camera" through a 3D multi-octave noise map. Selects chars and gradients from the terrain height.

Our floors have the appearance of bump mapping but we don't have to generate a normal map at all to achieve the effect. Instead a shader uses fractal Perlin noise based on the world position of each pixel to generate a pseudo-random "height" value for every point. #indiedev #gamedev #programming

How do we render lights and dynamic shadows on a unity tilemap? The full compute shader is complex, but the idea is simple: For every light source, use Bresenham's line algo to ray march backwards to every light source. If it hits a wall, that pixel gets a shadow! #gamedev #indiedev #programming

Algorithm - These walls look 3D, but it's actually entirely made from 2D tilemaps. How? Vert shader "extrudes" the wall tilemap away from the camera creating an illusion of depth.
