I’ve been terrible at sticking to my aim of writing weekly substacks, but this one is one I’d really love you all to read and share. Here, I question if the far right have occupied mainstream British political opinion, because that’s how I feel right now.

I cannot get that video of #CharlieKirk out of my head. He said that the gun deaths are “worth it” to keep the 2nd amendment. Words have consequences. It’s the ultimate fuck around, find out situation, but that doesn’t give anyone the right to take it upon themselves to kill another human being.

If the German Chancellor can block military exports to Israel, then so can Keir Starmer. I’m sure the Prime Minister sees the UK & Germany as comparable European powers. It also speaks volumes that Germany, a country which has a uniquely complex relationship with Israel, is prepared to do this.

If tax rises are coming, it needs to be on the back of the very wealthiest in our society. It needs to be set at a level that would both generate billions in revenue and at a level that multi millionaires & billionaires wouldn’t bat an eyelid at to prevent an exodus of high taxpayers.

I had to double check this but yes, our Prime Minister sees Palestinian statehood as a bargaining chip, rather than an unequivocal right of self determination. Having spoken to my local MP, he has been told that Palestine will eventually be recognised as a state, regardless of Israel’s response.

It may not be perfect, but we should be extremely grateful that we have our NHS. I can tell you from recent personal experience, if you suspect cancer, our health service acts quickly & with the right expertise at its disposal.

We abstain on a lot of Parliamentary votes. Political geeks like me understand why, but the image portrayed to the general public isn’t a good look. This was a matter of conscience for one of our MPs. Her vote AGAINST a Tory motion would not have made any difference at all in the bill’s passage.

If you can bring alternative voting to Mayoral & PCC elections, then why not do it for Parliamentary and local elections too? European style coalitions consist of parties working together to frustrate and exclude the far right. It works. We should follow suit in the UK.
