An abbreviation (ABB) in a journal article (JA) or Grant Application (GA) is rarely worth the words it saves. Every ABB requires cognitive resources (CR) and at my age by the time I'm halfway through a JA or GA I no longer have the CR to remember what your ABB stood for.

Photographing research participants – does anyone know any good papers / guidance on ethics of publishing photographs of research participants (with consent obviously)? Specifically, I worry that face blurring might be seen as de-humanising especially as my sample will be from a marginalised group.

LLMs are good at imitating humans because they're trained on vast quantities of human text from the internet. LLMs are used to generate vast quantities of text and put it on the internet. Doesn't this break the training conditions for all future LLMs and ensure they're doomed to eventually fail?

Having worked at newspapers going through layoffs and buyouts, I have seen folks only realize this kind of labor (like preparing contest entries, for example) was being done by a real person -- and not by elves overnight -- when she was no longer there to do it.

Really important work. Also important not to merely frame this as, 'hey, women faculty, don't forget to say no!' That places the burden in the wrong place. Organisations need to look critically at how requests are made and how workload is acknowledged. Systemic problems need systemic solutions.

And may this be your reminder to touch yourself today: know your boobs and balls. Feel them up and pay attention to changes. Feeling yourself up may save your life. It almost certainly will have saved mine. These things can grow and spread very fast, don’t let them. None of us think we have it.

Awesome job in an excellent lab that's pushing the envelope on transcranial brain stimulation. Til is an excellent mentor and I cannot recommend working with him highly enough.
