My latest chapter has been just published in a wonderful collection of essays on the Duke of Lerma and his term as the royal favorite of Philip III of Spain! In this piece, I explore the role of Lerma as a stateman within the military orders, where he disguised himself as an efficient bureaucrat.

I recently finished reading Mayu Fujikawa’s new exceptional book for an upcoming review. She expertly analyzes a wide variety of visual and material sources to reconstruct and decode the diverse representations of Japanese embassies in premodern Europe.

Join us on October 23 for a new session of the Suffolk Early Global Studies Seminar. In this occasion we will be conversing about hospitals, charity, and medicine in the premodern Hispanic world. Dr. Restrepo will be sharing his research on hospitals in 17th century Colombia! Zoom option available!

Backed by the Audiencia de Panamá and King Philip II, he not only received manumission but was also granted a royal pension and the right to bear arms. These privileges recognized his calidad (status) and subverted the colonial power dynamic between enslaved and enslaver.

Antón Zape, an enslaved African from Sierra Leone, secured his freedom in 1584 after years of military service to the Spanish Crown in Panama. His case reveals the many strategies of Afro-descendants "to live their own lives and achieve their own goals under imperialism." 🧵⬇️
