In the late 1920s, this Black jazz singer was tearing up Harlem clubs with a signature scat-baby style that stopped rooms cold. Helen Kane saw her perform, walked into a recording studio, and replicated the sound note for note. Max Fleischer built Betty Boop around it. The character became a global empire — films, merchandise, licensing deals worth millions. When Kane sued Fleischer in 1934 claiming ownership of the sound, Fleischer’s legal team produced a 1928 film of Baby Esther performing the exact same style. The court ruled against Kane. But the verdict never gave Esther Jones credit either. Her name appeared in no credits. No royalties. No recognition. The theft was proven in court and then quietly buried. Every Betty Boop doll ever sold, every licensed image, every cultural reference traces back to a Black woman the industry erased on purpose.
