First bugfix for the Long Night is out, and honestly its not as bad as I expected. Still more to come ofc but this feels like a decently stable point. I may be speaking to early of course but still! Promising.

Transcript of a battle in the version of the mod update I'm testing. In summary I was ambushed by a rogue machine, it hacked my systems to debuff me, and then blew up my hand with its coilgun before I could take it out with my rotary cannon. You know, normal dwarf fortress things.

just a thing you'll be able to encounter in an upcoming version of my mod. It took days to get the weapons to spawn right and I'm quite pleased to see that they do. You can also play as one, but you don't get a built-in weapon system, you gotta buy them.

wretched little tardigrade things swarming over the corpse of a rhinoceros-sized salamander-analog. I don't know how it happened but corpse-eating vermin go crazy in this upcoming update. I kind of like it, it reminds me of a whalefall and makes corpses very prominent on the map.

It's fun the way the limitations of modding (or any medium) can lead to unexpected narratives. If you add mechs to DF as war animals every hamlet would have 100 of them because DF is balanced for war dogs. So you have to make them transformed people to keep them rare, which means they have feelings.

Depths of the megastructure. A flooded labyrinth of machinery and glowing mold. Unsafe. As much as the graphical update of Dwarf Fortress is super cool I feel like there's a beauty to ASCII that can get overlooked. With the right colors, prose, and symbols you can paint a really evocative image.

shoutout to the latest dwarf fortress update giving ranged weapons variable aiming difficulties and reload times. I can now make sniper rifles actually mechanically more accurate instead of just making them shoot harder and hoping people buy it because i named it sniper rifle and put a scope on it.

For anyone interested, the Long Night has been updated! It's for experimental, so its only available for the Steam version (for now). Features include a vastly expanded procedural generation system for civilizations, new languages, and an overhaul of armor types to provide a lot more variety. 1/2

Still alive btw. Working for a procedural generation system for civilizations which uses flowchart logic ie if A result is rolled choose from table list B for future rolls. I could yap about how much easier this makes my life but take my word for it that it will be cool when I make it work.

To be honest I don't really know how to do this whole public social media thing aside from updates to my work and random anecdotes but I guess I should try and do some engagement-creating content so anyway I think that you could convert the majority of things of Dwarf Fortress into crabs.

Well so far my mod release has been going well. This is my first foray into actual coding and I just want to say the people over in the kitfox discord have been a huge help. I have never done a coding language until Lua scripting was implemented for DF and I'm still slowly learning but it's cool.

Amusing Dwarf Fortress feature. When you mess up the output of a crafting recipe to a material that doesn't exist, it makes magma. Its a really good way to inform the modder something went wrong, by way of setting the entire map on fire.
