7/ The diggers had to cope with the smell of decomposing bodies, rain, snow, wind, mud and flooding. The ground was so sodden that machinery couldn't be used.

6/ First Sergeant Jefferson Wiggins oversaw the work. He later recalled that when the men arrived, they were confronted with the sight of thousands of dead bodies lying on a tarp. There were no coffins, so the bodies had to be tied up in mattress covers where the men dug graves.

4/ One of those roles was burying the dead, a highly traumatic duty as many of the bodies were severely mutilated. The cemetery was constructed by the 960th Quartermaster Service Company, an all-Black unit of 260 men under the command of a White officer (as was usual).

3/ One of the two panels described how a million African-Americans volunteered for service during World War II, but had to fight against both the enemy and racism on their own side, including segregation within the army itself that confined many to supporting roles.

I love when people take a mythical creature but use various other animals instead, like the person who drew gryphons comprised of various felines and avians, including a Pallas cat/fish-owl combo.

Dung beetles know where they want to go. They roll, push or shove their dung ball & every few seconds they stop pushing to climb on top of the ball to make sure they are going in the right direction. This dung beetle male is just climbing down after a look around. More info in alt text

One of my favorite things about the tropical dry forests of Guanacaste are the winter visiting Scissor-tailed Flycatchers. They're later than a lot of other N American migrants, but they're starting to show up in good numbers now. When it gets too wet in Bijagua, I just head down to the sun.

Y'all, this, this jack-ass knew, he KNEW that his vehicle was too big to be calling himself reversing into a parking spot as small as they are here. He hit my car and did a split-second check for damage. I know that hoe saw me sitting in the driver's seat. I threw my arms up after the incident
